‘What a terrible example to set’: Joey Essex is slammed by animal rights activists for sharing photo of dog with cropped ears
Joey Essex has faced backlash after sharing a photo of a new dog, who appeared to have his ears cut off.
The reality star, 32, took to social media to introduce her fans to the Dobermann pup, writing: ‘newest member’ – in a post that has since been deleted.
But many people have taken issue with the dog’s ears sticking up, a feature of ear cropping – an illegal practice in the UK.
Review: Joey Essex has faced backlash after sharing a photo of a new dog, who appeared to have his ears cut off
Ear cropping is a painful process in which a dog’s outer ears are completely removed or surgically modified, with the tips or huge sections of the outer ear being cut off.
The practice is illegal in England and Wales, under Section 5 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
Despite this, the RSPCA has reported that this is normalizing due to an increase in celebrities owning cropped dogs, for cosmetic reasons.

Dog lovers were quick to slam Joey over the ill-thought-out post, saying he was promoting the cruel practice.
Animal welfare campaigner Jordan Shelley fumed: ‘Joey Essex is another dumb celeb normalizing ear cropping, a heinous illegal mutilation, to his many supporters by getting a dog put down

He added: ‘Too bad you felt the need to have a dog with mangled ears. Ear cropping is a brutal and illegal cosmetic mutilation. What a terrible example to set for all your supporters to further normalize this heinous illegal procedure! »
While TV vet Dr Sean McCormack said Joey’s post was a “major d**k move”.
He said: ‘What a disappointing development and frankly a kick in the teeth for all of us who have campaigned tirelessly to stop the trend, practice and importation of dogs who have been mutilated for fashion by undergoing a cut of ear.
“Joey Essex is a very influential public figure who has previously worked with Battersea to highlight the plight of dogs in shelters in need of homes.
“When it came to his attention about a year ago he was praising another celebrity for importing a cropped or mutilated dog from overseas to get around the fact that it is illegal in the UK for welfare reasons, he went out of his way to condemn the cruel practice and say he was an absolute advocate of dog welfare.
‘So why is he now parading around his poor new pup who has had his ears cut off so he looks tough like a so called ‘guard dog’.
“This needs to stop and ‘influencers’ need to be made aware that this is a major move.”
Love Island’s Olivia Attwood also took issue with the post and took to her Instagram Stories to blast Joey.
“Just a reminder,” she posted, alongside a preview of what the dogs look like before and after the crop, calling it “illegal and painful.”
“In most cases this is done without pain relief. Can you actually imagine – all for a fashion statement,’ she continued.
Olivia then shared snaps of her two dogs, including “a guard dog”, which she pointed out both had their “ears intact”.
Representatives for Joey declined to comment.
